BACK BAY
The Back Bay area was “created” in the late 1800s, when the marshland area was filled with gravel from Needham. Yes, that means all the places listed here sit on an old swamp. Take the Green Line to Hynes, unless otherwise indicated.

Bukowski’s Tavern
This punk-rock pub—where you’ll find lines from its eponymous poet on the walls, gritty ‘70s Stones bootlegs or the Pixies’ “Surfer Rosa” detonating the stereo, and a beer list that makes “War and Peace” look like a chapbook —is easy to miss. Tucked into the corner of a hotel parking structure and peeking out over the Mass Pike. Even more elusive is the best burger deal in town, which is an off-menu secret: The house burger is $1.69 before 8 p.m.
50 Dalton St., Boston. 11:30 a.m.-2 a.m., daily. 617.437.9999.
1281 Cambridge St., Cambridge. Sun-Wed 11:30 a.m.-1 a.m.; Thu-Sat 11:30 a.m.-2 a.m. MBTA: Red Line to Central, then 15 min. walk. 617.497.7077.
Betty’s Wok and Noodle Diner
It’s like a make-your-own sundae bar, but instead of ice cream you choose what type of noodles you want, instead of sauce, you choose, um, sauce, and then put a bunch of veggies in a bowl and they cook it up for you to a disco soundtrack.
250 Huntington Ave., Boston. MBTA: Green Line to Symphony. Tue-Thu Noon-10 p.m. Fri-Sat noon-11 p.m. 617.424.1950.
Dillon’s
After a while, the nearby restaurant/bars — Whiskeys, Cactus Club, etc. — might seem eerily similar to you. If so, give Dillon’s a try. With a menu composed of gourmet pizzas and burgers and glittered with entrees like lobster ravioli, Dillon’s very Irish sister establishments include The Purple Shamrock and The Black Rose. An outdoor patio set off from the street only adds to its draw.
955 Boylston St., Boston
10 a.m.-2 a.m. daily.

Pour House
Loud, crowded and open nightly ‘til 2 a.m., the Pour House is the perfect haunt for young professionals and recently-legal drinkers. The friendly staff does a fine job of pumping out everything from early morning omelettes to late night nachos, with nightly specials like Saturday’s Burger Mania and Thursday’s Mexican Madness. The price is right and nearly everyone’s single.

909 Boylston St., Boston. 8 a.m-2 a.m, daily. 617.236.1767.
