BOSTON. Tickets are going for thousands. Fans are waiting in line for days.
But 15-year-old Johnny Orozco will be living the dream tomorrow night.
Orozcoe, who is part of the Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay, will be attending the World Series at Fenway Park with his Big Brother Matt Anderson. If that weren't enough: Orozco will also be an honorary bat boy, which means he’ll be on the field during batting practice while the players warm up.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance,” said Orozco, who lives in Woburn. “At first I thought, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t go and I should let my mom go because it is one thing she wanted to do in life.’ She’s a diehard Red Sox fan.”
Orozco was chosen by Big Brothers, Big Sisters after Anderson, who has mentored the teen for almost four years, nominated him for the opportunity because of his passion for baseball. Orozco is hoping to someday play in the major leagues. He pitches for a Lowell Babe Ruth team and for a summer league.
“It's definitely going to be really special for him and for me,” said Anderson, 29, a business manager at Campbell’s and a Stoneham resident. “I've never been to a World Series game. For me, it'll be equally exciting."
This isn’t the first time Orozco has had a brush with baseball fame. Two years ago, he threw out the first pitch at a Pawtucket Red Sox game. The catcher, who couldn’t believe how fast Orozco’s pitch was, walked up to the teen and said, “Where the heck did that come from kid?”
