BC captures ’Pot

Eagles win in OT for first title since ’04

COLLEGE HOCKEY. Only in the Beanpot.

Nick Petrecki scored 7:07 into overtime last night to lift Boston College to a 6-5 win in a crazy Beanpot championship game at a sold-out TD Banknorth Garden.

It was Boston College’s 14th Beanpot title in school history and first since 2004. Coach Jerry York won his third championship. He also won one in 1965, when he played for the Eagles.

The teams combined for five third-period goals. Harvard’s Doug Rogers scored his second of the night, a fluttering knuckle-puck slap shot at 2:35 of the third to tie the game at 3.

Boston College, however, answered right back, picking up goals from Pat Gannon and Kyle Kucharski — each fighting through traffic in front of the crease to beat Harvard goalie Kyle Richter — to grab a 5-3 advantage that appeared to put the Eagles in the driver’s seat.

But Harvard, playing the role of huge underdog, fought hard for a wild comeback. Senior Jon Pelle took the puck down the length of the ice and wristed the puck over the shoulder of BC goalie John Muse at 11:14.

And the Crimson tied the score about four minutes later. Sophomore Alex Biega sent a hard shot towards the low slot, where senior Mike Taylor redirected it past Muse for his second goal of the game.

Boston College freshman Brian Gibbons registered his first career two-goal game, scoring his first to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. After the Crimson got a pair of goals from Taylor and Rogers to take a 2-0 lead after the first period, Gibbons tied it at 2 early in the second.

Petrecki, a BC freshman defenseman, scored his first career goal with a wrister from the right point to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead at 9:06 of the second period.
