Bostonians are a superstitious breed. If the boys of Fenway Park can break an 86-year curse, Deep Ellum will overcome at this formerly jinxed location in the heart of Allston Village. The few years I’ve dwelled in Allston Rock City, this spot was home to three forgettable proprietors. But in early 2007, Deep Ellum planted what hopes to be permanent roots in this once fruitless location. In that short time, this bar has become a neighborhood fixture, in part due to the chill vibe and the cool soundtrack befitting the local feel, coupled with the astounding cocktail expertise of the bartenders. Staffed by a charming crew, the waitresses call you sweetie and sit at your table while taking your order, the indie equivalent of Flo from Mel’s Diner. Whether you linger over liquor or order a full meal, you get the feeling that you can stay all night (and believe me, I have).
If there’s an afterlife, and drinks are served, I’d like my first to be the 1930s Manhattan — one of six Manhattans offered on the massive menu — a mix of rye and bitters that’s dangerously smooth. Frothy egg whites, homemade grenadine, and flaming orange peels are just a few of the wonders up the sleeves of the cocktail conjurers behind the bar. If you find hops more enchanting than spirits, they feature 22 taps which rotate regularly along with 100 bottled beers. When you’re feeling peckish, there’s a full menu of “international comfort food”; stick with the classic pub fare and leave room for dessert. Putting them in a league of their own, they serve their kickass brunch menu every day until the hangover-friendly hour of 4 p.m.! Their future’s so bright; we’ll have to wear shades this summer on the planned back porch.
