Going green on the couch

Reusability rating

The likelihood a show will influence viewers, measured on a scale of:

1: Like a Styrofoam cup, it’s not going anywhere.
to
5: 100 percent recyclable

ROUNDUP. If the DVDs in the green drink story above aren’t enough to get you psyched for Earth Day, here are TV picks that might motivate you to get off the couch and go green.

‘Big Ideas for a Small Planet’
Tonight’s edition, “Gen Y” (9 p.m., Sundance Channel), focuses on the kids of baby boomers who are growing up the most environmentally aware — not to mention as some of the most voracious consumers — of any previous generation. With a segment on your favorite local indie rockers Guster and their dedication to green touring, this is perhaps the hippest spot for Earth Day viewing.
Reusability rating: 5 Sundance gets bonus points because “Big Ideas” is part of the network’s weekly block of programming, “The Green,” dedicated to environmental issues.

HGTV full day of planet- friendly programming

Watching HGTV is like a weekend black hole for homeowners (and ambitious renters). Clear the TiVo — the network sucks in the design-obsessed on a weekday with a daylong slate of eco-focused episodes of the shows “It’s Easy Being Green” (integrating green options into your lifestyle, 11 a.m.), “Curb Appeal” (creating eco-friendly outdoor spaces, 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m.) and others. At 3 p.m., the winner of the HGTV Green Home 2008 house giveaway is announced.
Reusability rating: 4 The green tips are so great, you might just try to start every project at once. But remember: baby steps. You’re not Captain Planet.

Current TV’s Earth Day Environmental Pod marathon
Viewer-created, network-produced segments touching on practically everything environmental — from eco-friendly style to the organic vs. local food debate — air from 6 to 10 p.m. At 10 p.m., a new, eco-centric episode of the music series “The Fix Extended Play” interviews artists Andrew Bird and Jose Gonzalez about green touring.
Reusability rating: 4 Who’s more influential than your peers?
