Believe it or not, the season is already 20 percent over. It’s time to start drawing conclusions about your team. If you don’t form an opinion on a guy’s numbers now — either fluke or legit — you could be mired so deep in the standings you may never recover.
So let’s get rid of the gray area. Here are five bold opinions on some controversial players.
1. Travis Hafner, Indians, is done: When you haven’t hit well in two seasons (declining bat speed?), it’s more than a slump. “Pronk” is a cancer that should be traded away before his value hits zero.
2. Matt Kemp, Dodgers, will finish with better fantasy numbers than Prince Fielder, Brewers: Fielder has yet to get hot. But even when he does, he won’t steal or have as high an average as the multi-talented Kemp.
3. Cliff Lee, Indians, will finish with an ERA above 4.00: Considering his ERA is 0.96 right now through five starts, his season is going to have to take a horrifying turn for this one to come true. Watch it like a NASCAR accident.
4. Joakim Soria, Royals, will have more saves than Jason Isringhausen, Cardinals: Soria is one of the nastiest relievers in the game. His save conversion rate will be much higher than his St. Louis counterpart. So the prediction here is that the Royals will have as many save opportunities as the Cardinals. They will. Book it.
5. Geovany Soto will hit some kind of wall: The best catcher in fantasy right now is a legit stud. But very few players are immune to the rookie wall, and even less are immune to the catcher wall. Don’t be afraid to sell Soto high sometime in the next couple weeks. He’ll be decent all year, but not this great.
