BOSTON. The South Boston woman accused of setting a fire that killed her lover’s two children last month was held on $1 million bail yesterday.
Nicole Chuminski, 25, was charged with two counts of murder and one count of burning a dwelling for allegedly tossing a firebomb into a West Sixth Street apartment early on April 6, starting a blaze that caught and killed 14-year-old Acia Johnson and 2-year-old Sophia Johnson.
Chuminski’s attorney, William White, said his client “loved the children” and has an alibi as to where she was when the fire was lit. Authorities allege an accelerant found on the apartment’s door frame matches one on Chuminski’s clothing.
According to prosecutors, Chuminski and the sisters’ mother, Anna Reisopoulos, feuded the night of the fire.
Reisopoulos wept throughout the proceedings yesterday. Relatives spoke for her outside the court.
“We’re here for our babies, we want justice ... it was a good feeling that [Chuminski] knew that we were there because we knew from the start that she did it,” said Aida Ramos, a relative of the victims.
