MLB. It’s no secret that baseball players are creatures of habit and like to plan out their days as the schedule allows.
One look at this month’s schedule tells the Red Sox they would be well-advised to take advantage of the next seven days.
At 14-5, the best home team in the American League spends the next seven days in the friendly confines of Fenway Park, playing the Brewers for three interleague games and Kansas City for four before leaving on another jet plane knowing they won’t be back again until June 3.
“We’re always more comfortable at home,” said Tim Wakefield, who gets the ball twice on this homestand, beginning with a start Saturday against Milwaukee. “Traveling, being away from your families takes a toll on you after a while.”
Boston, which just finished an injury-riddled 4-6 trip through Detroit, Minnesota and Baltimore, plays just 11 home games this month as opposed to 18 on the road. The month concludes with the second of three trips this season to the West Coast.
“We know that if we don’t have a lot of games at home now, that means we’ll have more in the future,” Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia added. “That’s the good thing about this game — it all evens out. But it’ll be nice to be home.”
To Pedroia’s point, the Red Sox play 15 home games in June, and finish the season by playing 19 of their final 28 at Fenway.
