Report ranks Mass. drivers 48th in U.S.

BOSTON. In what can only be classified as an alarming development, Massachusetts drivers ranked among the worst in the country on a recent test that examined knowledge of the road.

The Commonwealth scored 75.0 on the GMAC Insurance National Drivers Test, ranking the state 48th overall. New York, Washington, D.C., and New Jersey rounded out the rankings, with Kansas, Wyoming and Nebraska leading the way.

The test used 20 questions from current Department of Motor Vehicle exams. A 70 was a passing grade, a mark only New Jersey failed to reach.

Vermont was the lone New England state to appear in the top 20, finishing in a tie for 18th.
