If you can’t go

DOTC 2008 will take place on seven Saturdays in 2008: May 31, June 14, June 28, July 12, July 26, Aug.t 23 and Sept.20

PREVIEW. If there’s anyone you can trust with your night out, it’s the boys of Soulclap, Charles Levine and Eli Goldstein. Why? Because they keep the party going, without getting the cops called on you.

“We have nice sound systems, nice sounds for outdoors … but not loud enough to disturb the neighbors.”

The duo, along with Marz Entertainment and Red Bull, host the series of open-air party events Dancing on the Charles, and it seems that the second annual string of celebrations has all the bases covered, from port-a-potties on site to the tiki torches and Red Bull-supplied outdoor furniture. Levine says the idea for the event, which has grown to include seven dates since its inception last year, is inspired by places like Ibiza, Miami, and Los Angeles where parting outdoors is the norm. However, the real inspiration for the parties were the electronica kings’ amigos. “It really started for our friends who were bored with Boston night life,” Levine says. “But once everyone found out how authentic we were, and how much fun we were having, we went from about 150 people to 300 … and booked four more dates.”

While Dancing on the Charles is a showcase for electronic dance music and a chance for Boston’s DJs to “get a little love in their own backyard” as Levine puts it, the half of Soulclap stresses the event is hardly exclusive.

“It’s for anyone with an open mind and a free spirit,” says Levine. “It’s about a love of DJ music, and you can see that so expressed on the dance floor.”

MMMpod
In the July MMMpod, Young Veins talk about breaking away from Panic! at the Disco, Keith Lockhart talks about Buckwheat Zydeco throwing the Boston Pops for a loop, Zooey Deschanel talks about how Roy Orbison inspired a She & Him song, Derek Miller of Sleigh Bells talks about how awesome Funkadelic is, and we talk about how awesome Jimmy Cliff is, who in turn talks about Sam Cooke and divine intervention. An explosive show for July! Oh yeah, and we also test your knowledge of America songs in the MMMPod medley.
