PREVIEW. You need confidence to wear fancy panties, and even more to title your musical comedy after this style of undergarment. According to Carolynne Warren, confidence is exactly what inspired her two-woman show, “Fancee Panties.”
The concept for the show, which is 90 musical minutes of dynamic sketches, came from her experiences while living and working in Chicago, where she was struck by people with a certain brazen behavior.
“I imagined that if you had on really fancy panties you might get a very sassy attitude,” she says.
But the concept branches beyond britches to confident people of both genders.
“We both decided that Kevin Garnett at the [Celtics’ championship] parade had fancy panties,” says Mary Callanan, who makes up the other half of the two-woman show.
The pair, who both attended Boston Latin, seem contentedly relaxed and comfortable with each other — they finish each others’ sentences with ease and know just how to make each other laugh. Both of the talented women have had extensive experience in musical productions, but Warren attributes the beginning of her career to her time with Second City.
“I love doing musical theater, don’t get me wrong,” she says. “But this place, this playground on stage where you can write your own material and be inspired by things that happen in your life or in your imagination and just create them into different skits is really satisfying and very fun. And it’s nice to have a partner to do it with.”
