WHITE STRIPESChristian Lander, the writer behind the Web site Stuff White People Like, discusses his book of the same name tonight, 7, at the Harvard Book Store (1256 Mass. Ave., Cambridge. MBTA: Red Line to Harvard). Lander explains on his site that a joke over IM with a pal — and a mini brainstorm that yielded “yoga,” “plays,” “getting divorced” and “therapy” — spiraled, in just seven months, into 114 posts garnering 33 million site hits. Blogging is not on the list; book deals are. The reading is free; call 617-661-1515 or go to www.harvard.com for more info. WHITE STRIPES

ENTERTAINMENT

Backyard Summer Series: ‘Friday the 13th’
Tonight, 8 p.m.
Video Underground
385 Centre St., Jamaica Plain
MBTA: Orange Line to Jackson
$5, 617-522-4949
www.thevideounderground.com
It’s neither Friday, nor the 13th, but the folks at Cinescare and Video Underground don’t care about such semantics — it’s summer and Camp Crystal Lake is just around the corner. It’s Bring Your Own BBQ night so grab some brisket — Jason is waiting.

Free Friday Flicks
Friday, 8 p.m.
The Hatch Shell
Esplanade, Boston
MBTA: Red Line to Charles/MGH or Green Line to Arlington
Free, 617-787-7200
www.wbz.com
We had to consult our lawyers before writing up this capsule for fear of retribution by DreamWorks. We’re not sure how other free movie series can publish the titles of the films being screened (to think!), but WBZ can’t. We’ll just say that all “hints” point to a buzz-worthy animation voiced by Jerry Seinfeld. Oh, what the heck, it’s “Bee Movie.” Come and get us Katzenberg!

Micro Car Lawn Party
Saturday, 1-4 p.m.
Larz Anderson Auto Museum
15 Newton St., Brookline
Car owners $20, spectators $10
617-522-6547
www.larzanderson.org
At car shows, you’re always told, “look, but don’t touch.” At this Larz Anderson party, not only can you touch, you might score a ride. Owners of micro models from Goggomobile, Zundapp, Isetta, Messerschmitt, Vespa, Heinkle Trojan and the like are invited to show up and show off, while attendees can get a gas out of these one- and two-cylinder, and often three-wheeled weebees.

Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School
Sunday, 2:30 p.m.
Great Scott
1222 Comm. Ave., Boston
MBTA: Green B Line to Harvard Ave.
$7, 18+, 617-566-9014
www.greatscottboston.com
We wouldn’t dare to put Allston-Brighton and Montmartre in the same sentence, but Sunday afternoon, it’s as close as we can get without taking out a second mortgage for a flight to Paris (or a time machine to the fin de siecle). The NYC-based drawing group Dr. Sketchy gathers naughty burlesque-types for some Toulouse-Lautrec inspiration. Bring your own paper and pencils or paints (or broken crayons, doesn’t matter).

MUSIC

Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players
Tonight, 8
Café 939
939 Boylston St., Boston
MBTA: Green Line to Hynes
$13, all ages, 617-747-2261
www.cafe939.com
The Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players is a lesson in kitschy fun. Really a family, really named Trachtenburg, this mother-father-daughter trio combs yard sales and eBay for vintage slide sets (vacations, business presentations, family albums) and creates story-song pop ditties based on their wide-tie and horned-rim findings.

The Beatings
Tonight, 9
Great Scott
1222 Comm. Ave., Boston
MBTA: Green B Line to
Harvard Ave.
$8, 18+, 617-566-9014
www.greatscottboston.com
“We’re waiting.” That’s all we have to say to the Beatings. Screw babies, screw weddings, screw side projects — get in the studio and make us another slab of that GBV-coated indie rock you do so well. Well, a live set will have to do. While we hold on in the bunker, music bloggert Ryan’s Smashing Life hosts a night of smashing locals that includes the Beatings and Vivian Darkbloom (whose pins, “I [heart] VD,” get our vote). Hundred Years War and The Sunsets Quick kick it off.

Donna Summer
Saturday, 7:30 p.m.
Bank of America Pavilion
290 Northern Ave., Boston
MBTA: Silver Line to Silver Line Way
$38-$100, all ages, 617-931-2000
www.ticketmaster.com
The queen may be back, but she should’ve picked a different producer. On “Crayons,” her first album in 18 years, Donna Summer’s vocals are unfortunately mired in du-jour production goo. (When you have an Aretha, there’s no need to Fergie-ize things.) But “Stamp Your Feet” is a worthy lead single, and the Dorchester-bred gal’s got a deep sing-along catalogue that doesn’t sound like it was run through Britney’s Nano. The night will benefit in part Action for Boston Community Development (ABCD); meet and greet ($150) details are on their Web site, www.bostonabcd.org.

Winterpills
Saturday, 8 p.m.
Club Passim
47 Palmer St., Cambridge
MBTA: Red Line to Harvard
$15, all ages, 617-492-7679
www.clubpassim.org
We’d hate to invoke the three most egregious words in music criticism (”Garden State” soundtrack), but the Christ is Right, what it takes to get some people to sit up and take notice of the great bands toiling in their backyard. Winterpills are from deeper woods (Northampton) and specialize in British folk spackled in a partly cloudy/partly sunny gauze. Stop staring at the poster of Zach Braff and download “The Light Divides” on iTunes. Or, god forbid, go to a record store.

BOWL IT LIKE BECKETTRed Sox hurler Josh Beckett puts down the mitt and picks up a bowling ball all for the sake of charity — namely The Josh Beckett Foundation, which benefits various children’s programs. LOCAL

Bastille Day Block Party
Sunday, 3-10 p.m.
Harvard Square
Holyoke Street
MBTA: Red Line to Harvard
Free, 491-3434
www.harvardsquare.com
If your flag swings blue, white and red, celebrate Francophile style at Harvard Square’s Bastille Day celebration. For the uninitiated, Bastille Day (July 14) is France’s national holiday and gives the rest of us an excuse to be rude for no good reason. The day’s highlights include the annual Waiter’s Race, kiddie parade, beer garden and live bands like the Hot 8 Brass Band. Allons-y, baby!

Boston Harbor Swim Across America
Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Starts and finishes at Rowes Wharf
MBTA: Blue Line to Aquarium
888.SWIM.USA
www.swimacrossamerica.org
We couldn’t swim to a float full of frozen margaritas never mind legs of a 22-mile relay race. That’s why we write about this stuff instead of actually participating. The annual Swim Across America events go down this week and include the Boston Harbor Islands tour Friday, and a much more humane half-mile version at Nantasket Beach Saturday, 9 a.m.

CULTURAL

‘Glass: A Portrait of Philip in Twelve Parts’
Today, 1:30; Saturday, 10:30 a.m.; Sunday, 11 a.m.
Museum of Fine Arts
465 Huntington Ave., Boston
MBTA: Green E Line to Museum
$7/$6, all ages, 617-267-9300
www.mfa.org
“Shine” director Scott Hicks takes a sharp left turn away from the cloying territory of his last film, “No Reservations,” with a documentary dedicated to the minimalist composer Philip Glass. Artistic collaborators and friends such as Errol Morris, Chuck Close and Martin Scorsese provide commentary.

Dire Literary BBQ
Friday, 6 p.m.
Out of the Blue Art Gallery
106 Prospect St., Cambridge
MBTA: Red Line to Central
$7, 617-354-5287
www.outofthebluegallery.com
www.direreader.com
You don’t need to read a Hemingway bio to know that writers are big drinkers. Now add “pork rib addicts” to the list of stereotypes. Well, if Timothy Gager gets his way. He’s been hosting Dire readings (with suds and grub) sat Out of the Blue and Friday marks the annual grillin’ edition. The Swaggerin’ Growlers perform, followed the open mic, and featured readings by Tom Daley and the folks at Quick Fiction Magazine.

‘Boston’ Exhibit
Thursday and Friday, 1-6 p.m.; Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Gallery SBAA 369
369 West Broadway, South Boston
MBTA: Red Line to Broadway
Free, 617 216-4852
www.southbostonartsassoc.org
Close to a dozen SBAA associates share their Beantown-focused pieces in this exhibit, sure to include pointillist portraits of MENSA janitors and watercolors of Sox/Yankees donnybrooks. You know, ‘cause that’s all Boston has to offer.

SPORTS

Boston Lobsters
Tonight and Saturday, 7 p.m.; Sunday, 4 p.m.
Ferncroft Country Club
10 Village Road, Middleton
$25-$60, 877-617-LOBS
www.bostonlobsters.net
Martina Navratilova leads the Boston Lobsters team through three home matches this weekend — tonight facing off against the Philadelphia Freedoms, featuring this year’s Wimbledon winner, Venus Williams; Saturday against New York Buzz; and Sunday’s match-up with New York Sportimes.

Red Sox vs. Orioles
Friday and Saturday, 7:05 p.m.; Sunday, 1:35 p.m.
Fenway Park
4 Yawkey Way, Boston
MBTA: Green Line to Kenmore
$12-$325, 877-REDSOX9
www.redsox.com
The Red Sox close out the first half with a three-game series against old friend Kevin Millar and the Orioles this weekend. After struggling to stay afloat on their recent road trip, the Sox have once again caught fire at Fenway, sweeping the Twins and trying to carry that momentum into the All-Star break.

GET LOST   The Somermovie Fest kicks off tonight, 8, at Seven Hills Park (adjacent to 55 Davis Square and Holland St. MBTA: Red Line to Davis) with the ’80s vampire classic, “The Lost Boys,” starring a young (and hungry) Kiefer Sutherland.
