MBTA bus ridership spikes in May

BOSTON. Another month, and another bump in ridership for the T.

MBTA officials announced yesterday 47,000 more riders each day used the buses in May compared with the same month a year ago, and there were 6.3 percent more bus trips taken in May than in April.

In addition, bus ridership exceeded 400,000 trips for only the fifth month in more than eight years.

Overall, T ridership for May was up 5.3 percent compared with last year. Commuter rail ridership also tied the highest average daily numbers in May with 142,600 trips a day, the same figure reached in February of this year. Average weekday ridership on the commuter rail system also grew for the third straight month.
