It doesn’t matter if you’ve got piles of Coltrane and Louis Armstrong records lining your bedroom, or if you can’t tell the difference between Ella and Ellington — some good jazz can be enjoyed anywhere, anytime. This Friday, catch one performance of 28 organized by Boston’s seventh annual Jazz in July series, when the breezy Harry Fix Trio jazzes up Borders in Downtown Crossing. It’s in the afternoon, perfect for an above-average lunch break.

Just days before releasing his first full-length album, “Goddamned,” the New York-based Jay Brannan plays the Paradise. If his folky, violin-backed tracks aren’t your bag, at least go for the chance to stare at those chiseled cheekbones covered in scruff. (Hint: If he looks familiar, that face also performed a song and appeared in John Cameron Mitchell’s 2006 sexy comedy, “Shortbus”).

Ah, the Oldies 103.3 free summer concert series is back, bringing Canada’s Guess Who singing about an “American Woman,” and Rhode Island-bred Cafferty sounding like he’s from New Jersey. Raise a ’Gansett to Beaver Brown. That’s where they’re from. But, of course ’Gansett isn’t actually brewed in Rhode Island anymore.
