Mayer gives Boston the ‘Bizness’

REVIEW. John Mayer, the Berklee dropout with an entertaining blog and a less critically lauded discography, is completely “Comfortable” with where he is in life. At least, that’s what his show at the Comcast Center on Saturday night suggested.

Sporting a gray Coco Crisp jersey, Mayer gave those in attendance a night of hits and a smattering of covers — more mainstream  than the obscurities he’s known to favor in his sets.

He kicked off the night with “No Such Thing,” the hit that sent him into stardom seven years ago, and shifted easily into “Clarity” before trying his best Remy impression: “Taking Boston in the lead, two to nothing.”

After familiar singles and a cover of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin,’” Mayer unleashed a version of “Bigger Than My Body” from 2003’s “Heavier Things,” that could only be described as epic.

The highlight, though, was a sincere cover of Sam Cooke’s defiant, blues-in-fused “Ain’t Nobody’s Bizness If I Do,” which he played almost entirely with his eyes shut. The soulful rendition was almost like a musical way of flipping off the legions of critics who dismiss him, especially when Mayer launched into one of his signature tireless, lean way back, strained-faced solos. He left no part of his guitar un-touched and no audience member unimpressed.
