BOSTON. The House approved legislation yesterday that would create a two-day, tax-free holiday next month.
The bill would relieve consumers of paying a sales tax on single item purchases of $2,500 or less. The holiday would likely take place on Aug. 16, and 17. It would mark the fifth year in a row the state would have adopted such a holiday.
“By offering a weekend-long sales tax holiday, we are giving taxpayers a much needed break,” House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi said in a statement.
The bill now heads to the Senate, whose leader, Therese Murray, and Gov. Deval Patrick have both expressed support for the measure.
