Even an intrepid tippler like yours truly gets a little weary of trying out the latest in trendy taverns. Sometimes it’s better to revisit a familiar favorite to cleanse the palate. I met a friend at old-standby River Gods to see if they still had the best hummus in town (verdict: still lick-the-plate good) and to sip on a signature Stella shandy, a thirst-quenching mix of beer and Sprite.
Down River Street away from the hustle and flowing litter of Central Square, the sleepy pub is marked by the trees dotted with twinkling lights. The gothic interior, though charming, could give the Medieval Manor a run for its money. From ecclesiastical thrones as chairs to the full suit of armor in the corner, the rococo retro vibe is almost too theme-y. But the most distinguishing aspect of the décor has got to be the imposing mermaid sculpture that looms over the bar. This nautical barmaid and the area she inhabits are often whimsically decorated in tune with the changing seasons.
M y pal was a little late and I was a lotta hungry, so I ordered a Bloody Mary in an attempt to curb my appetite. Served in a rocks glass, it was quite spicy yet scrumptious and garnished with olives, celery, lemon and lime. Their eclectic food menu ranges from vegan fare to one of the better burgers around town. Lovebirds note, their French fries are made for sharing, but not for kissing afterwards. The accompanying aioli, though delectable, is extremely garlicky: my tiny portion had four cloves in it!
Crowds happen due to the small size of the venue. You’ll rub shoulders (literally) with patrons there for DJs every night of the week. When you’re tired of the “latest” libations, take yourself to the River to wet your whistle.
