In the first election since U.S. Sen. Scott Brown drove his pickup truck past favorite Martha Coakley, Bay State Democrats aren’t taking any perceived outsiders lightly.
U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch has even scheduled a rally with former President Bill Clinton today at the Ironworkers Local 7 union hall in South Boston — 47 days before his primary against Mac D’Alessandro.
“In this environment outsiders do well,” said Stu Rothenberg of the Rothenberg Political Report. “It’s easy to run against the establishment. You can see how any incumbent Democrat is a little antsy.”
Lynch has represented the state’s 9th congressional district since 2001. His campaign said the Clinton event is a testament to the congressman’s status and was scheduled around Chelsea Clinton’s wedding.
D’Alessandro spokesman Mathew Helman said the “Democratic establishment” is supporting incumbents across the country.
“Like with Arlen Specter [of Pennsylvania] and Blanche Lincoln [of Arkansas],” he said.
